From Disaster Recovery to Disaster Avoidance
My model uses free resources to remediate & improve a community’s soil & water
Transforms waste into resources
Saves money
Begins the Disaster Avoidance movement
Simultaneously creates an ECO-OASIS, addressing food shortages
Urges local high school & community talent to create a core group to work with city/state experts, a landscape architect & a permaculture expert, seasoned in creating hügelkultur beds to address problematic civil engineering obstacles
Group designs solutions & coordinates yard waste & free tree trimmings to maximize efficiency
Food waste & cardboard = chef’s kiss of raised beds
Hügelkulturs require little to no water maintenance
Permaculture expert chooses plants for food, medicine, pollinator preference, and their ability to absorb, direct & filter inevitable flood waters
Shift to “Disaster Avoidance” lowers the city’s insurance rating, saving residents thousands in premiums, and eliminates “Disaster Recovery” line items from the budget.
Tree trimmers are happy for the free drop
Project days can be coordinated through ChipDrop.com & via district networking for yard materials, food waste and cardboard assets
Yard waste is no longer a cost to process but rather maximized to serve the community
Restaurants, schools, and neighbors contribute food, paper, & cardboard
Core team leads project days - additional volunteers learn to build hügelkultur beds, beneficial planting & landscape design
Skidsters do the heavy lifting of trees & branches while students weave materials together to create a new, beautifully strategic landscape to serve & protect areas once considered problematic
Redirect tons from the landfill
Builds the health of soil & filters water run-off
More cost-avoidance
Creates future Disaster Avoidance Experts
Equipped with a unique, problem-solving skillset
Empowered by co-leading a second, smaller project
Lead a 3rd, independent project in the community
Creates Disaster Avoidance Experts
Unique skillset in a brand-new industry
Empowered to lead & teach similar projects in the community or exponentially grow the movement in surrounding areas, across the US or abroad
Back-fill important positions within the city
Mycoremediation - the cleaning of earth or water using mushrooms
Remediate blighted sites for more disaster avoidance & astronomical cost-savings and cost-avoidance
Reclaim land previously considered unusable
Saving The Dunes
Collect & crush glass using a solar-powered pump & grinders
Use Mycoremediation and bioremediation (using plants) plus nearby lake/river water to clean both water & the glass sand
Scaled to potential, process creates an aesthetically pleasing landscape & reverses the Billion-dollar erosion problem of the entire South Basin
Potential REVERSAL within 3 years, adding to shoreline soon after
Simultaneous benefits:
Cleans water
Builds structure
Eliminates algae blooms
Improves tourism dollars
Local flora & fauna populations flourish & multiply
Lakefront Giants
Lakefront giants like BP and the mills can work with me on opportunities I’ve found in THEIR processes
Compensation is ~8-10% of their cost-savings for the next 10 years
Specifically allocated to support community
~3% to support their local community
Purchas materials for competitions to create better, more effective filtration systems to maximize efforts
Rebuild community pride and add beauty, function, & protection
Remediate Blighted sites, exponentially decreasing fines
~1% to support Paul Stamets’ Mycoremediation research and project goals, or others he wants to support
~1% to support world appropriate disaster recovery efforts
Provide glass to sand filtration systems to repair coastline damage & clean contaminated water
Provide bucket filtration systems so families can quickly access clean drinking water after emergencies
~1% to on-board sister industries overseas w/out regulation
i.e.: Those polluting the Ganges River
Mycoremediation could also serve as a free food or medicine source
~1% to provide river filters at high-impact locations further up-stream
~1-3% to my digression
Riprap
Easy win for State Highways, bridges over waterways, and railroads to deal with oily and contaminated road run-off
Use plants, mushrooms, and SCOBY technology, to create a beautiful, gradual water filtration system
Form & Function
Add beauty to the surrounding area that simultaneously cleans soil and the water entering waterways
Improve the structure (Function) of the riprap itself as it builds an inter-connected structural network that locks everything into place
Grants cover easy wins & add beauty to the form and functional integrity of the landscape
Interns & HS Community Service Hours
This effort has incredible potential
